Key Features
Thomastik Dominant double bass strings have a broad sound that's rich in overtones. These strings are designed to bring you all the timbral qualities of traditional gut strings with none of the drawbacks and all of the advantages offered by modern string-making. The strings radiate sound with none of the metallic qualities that are often heard in metal strings. A further advantage of modern string making that Dominants possess is their extreme resistance to temperature change, meaning that these strings will retain their tuning even in the most trying of conditions.

The materials can have a great effect on the sound a string produces. This is why string makers will design their strings to produce certain timbres or to complement certain instruments. Dominants are no exception, all bass Dominants have a synthetic core which is preferred for its similarity to gut in tone but, unlike gut, it holds its tuning more reliably and is more durable. All the strings are wound with chromium-nickel steel (chrome). Pure chromium is brittle and not conducive to string making, so Thomastik adds nickel to allow for string making. The resultant sound is darker than other materials and much better for the low range that the double bass occupies.
Thomastik Dominant bass strings are available in both orchestral tuning (GDAE) and solo tuning (AEBF#). Solo tuning is best for performers of solo repertoire as the strings are designed to be tuned a tone higher than standard tuning. For orchestral players with low C extensions, there is an extended-length C string available.
These strings are sold for 3/4 size basses only. 3/4 size basses make up the majority of basses that are played so your bass will most likely be this size. To ensure that your bass will have the best fit, Thomastik provides the vibrating string length that their strings are designed to work optimally for. Measuring this is simple, you measure from the nut (top of the fingerboard) to where the strings meet the bridge.
This is the length of the string that freely vibrates so, therefore, is the vibrating string length. Double basses are less standardised in size than other string instruments so the vibrating string length isn't always consistent between 3/4 size basses. Because of this, it is recommended that you check your bass' measurements before choosing your strings.
