Key Features
Steinberg Dorico Pro 4 is a powerful musical notation program. It offers the ability to write beautiful notation straight to the stave, allowing you to easily create sheet music printouts to a professional standard. Playback your music in-program with stunning realism - utilising Steinberg's excellent HALion Symphonic Orchestra - or use Dorico to import MIDI data and convert it directly into written music. Whatever your workflow, Dorico 4 gives you the versatility and musical intelligence to both streamline it, and considerably improve the results.
Dorico 4 is an approachable piece of software, easy to learn thanks to an uncluttered interface and intuitive design. However, it offers so much depth and capacity for complexity that even the most demanding professional will be satisfied. Featuring fully integrated support for modern composition techniques such as microtonality, open meter, complex tuplets, and much more - Dorico 4 translates your ideas to a musical reality, without restrictions. Dorico 4 utilises Steinberg's new licensing system - a convenient software-based system that removes the need for physical dongles.

A new, dedicated Key Editor window lets you seamlessly edit the MIDI performance of your music notation. Adjust dynamics, velocities, and continuous controllers down to the minutiae, allowing you to create highly realistic mock-ups of your music. The brand-new Smart MIDI Import feature intelligently deciphers raw MIDI data in order to interpret incoming tracks and massively reduce the amount of manual "tidying up" work one would normally have to do - such as adding performance techniques and separating polyphonic lines.
Three new on-screen instruments make note input easier than ever - the piano, fretboard, and drum pad allow you to simply press the note you want to add. These intuitive instruments are all touch-enabled for Windows devices with touch screens such as the Microsoft Surface. Dorico 4 comes with plenty of quality-of-life improvements, such as the ability to save project templates for non-standard ensembles; automatic score ordering (which puts any added instrument or soloist in the conventional place in the score order); instrument filtering (for focusing in on a couple of parts in a large score); and much, much more!
Dorico 4 features the most versatile and flexible note input and editing tools of any scoring software. Seamlessly write, edit, and create - with support for modern composition techniques such as complex tuplets, microtonality, and open meter allowing you to directly write what's in your head without having to resort to workarounds. Dorico's high performance allows you to create huge scores for vast ensembles, with no slowing down at all - so you can create uninhibited.
Designed to adhere to the traditions of music engraving that were established by master craftsmen, Dorico 4 produces beautifully proportioned and balanced sheet music by default. Its comprehensive collision avoidance and unique kerning capabilities ensure that you're producing natural-looking sheet music as you write it. The engine powering these design decisions is open to fine levels of user control, so you can adjust countless parameters in order to get whatever result you want.
Whether you're creating learning resources for a class, or writing up your composition assignment for submission, Dorico 4 is the ideal scoring programme for teachers and students alike. The streamlined user interface fits perfectly on a single display, and intuitive keyboard commands allow fluid traversal of the programme with no need for external MIDI devices - perfect for student laptops. Flexible page layout features and user templates allow you to quickly produce assignments and resources for your class, and the high-performance audio playback makes Dorico fantastic for demonstrating compositional techniques live.
Steinberg's new identity-based license management system does away with physical eLicensers, instead simply requiring you to sign into the software with your Steinberg ID. You can even run Dorico 4 on two computers with a single-user license by signing in on each machine. This flexible new system unshackles you from only being able to work if you have your licenser with you - not to mention, it frees up a USB slot!
