Offering a tremendous level of flexibility and functionality, Sonnox Oxford EQ features four unique modes. Each mode is designed for a specific application within your mix, ensuring that it will quickly become your go-to for all processing needs of your tracks, busses, mix or mastering application.
Type 1 harnesses the sound of '80s USA-style recording consoles with a reciprocal EQ curve. This means that the boost and cut levels are identical across each frequency band, allowing for accurate EQ adjustments across the full spectrum. Ideal when working with individual instruments or mixes that cross the full spectrum including drum mixes or pianos, Type 1 remains highly musical and transparent regardless of the attenuation or boosting levels.
Type 2 performs similarly to Type 1 but features a non-reciprocal curve, with the cut attenuation level producing a much tighter Q-factor. This is ideal for targetting specific problem frequencies within an individual instrument, where cuts are needed to eliminate harsh resonances, room nodes or other unwanted spikes and boosts can be broader to introduce global changes. Distorted electric guitar is a fantastic example to remove harsh, spikey frequencies within 3-4kHz whilst boosting more broadly lower mid-range for punch and energy.
Type 3 is akin to traditional British-style console curves with more steep slopes. The steeper slopes can often introduce a more immediate sound to your mix, helping you to drive vocals or other key melodic instruments above a dense mix.
Type 4 is engineered specifically as a mastering-grade EQ to create broad strokes across the entire frequency range. Gentle slopes offer soft and broad changes, allowing you to make global adjustments to the overall response of the mix without altering the character and tone of the instruments. Tracks engineered in non-ideal environments may suffer from a lack of low or high end when compared to commercial releases, making Oxford your go-to in these mastering situations. Add or dial back low and high-end to create a balanced mix which will translate across multiple systems without revising the mix entirely.
