The Rob Papen RoCoder is a vocoder plugin like no other. Expanding on the classic design of the vocoder, this digital plugin boasts a whole host of creative tools that take the iconic vocoder one step further. Starting with a 32-band vocoder, the RoCoder introduces a range of different modes which you can use to create a wide range of varied sounds. The new modes include Additive, Vocoder + Additive, Noise, Tune Noise and Tuned Comb modes.

Re-defining the vocoder, the RoCoder takes the classic design and improves it for the modern, digital user. With six modes to choose from, the RoCoder puts full control in your hands. Starting with the standard vocoder mode, the plugin provides you with a 32-band vocoder with a built-in carrier synthesizer. In comparison, using the ‘Additive’ mode; the RoCoder’s engine will generate 32 bands of harmonics using sine waveforms, with their volume dictated by the corresponding modulation band. This mode is great for creating atonal sound effects.
The combined additive/vocoder mode blends together both the vocoder and additive modes together, allowing you to create some truly unique tonal results. ‘Noise’ mode uses the MIDI keyboard notes to create the modulator band. The number of bands is dictated by the number of notes you play.
’Tuned Noise’ mode is ideal for use on rhythmic sounds such as drums and percussion. It works by using the MIDI keyboard not to create the necessary band. For example, playing the A4 note would create one band at the frequency of 440Hz (A4), with the number of bands dependant on how many notes you play. ‘Tuned Comb’ mode creates comb filter bands from MIDI keyboard notes. The more notes you play, the more Com Filter bands are played. The ‘Vocoder Input Carrier’ mode allows you to use the side audio input as the carrier instead of the built-in carrier synthesizer, ideal for use with external hardware.
As with most Rob Papen plugins, the RoCoder features an X/Y pad section that utilises real-time interactive control of a programmable modulation source. You can use the X/Y pad to generate movement in up to eight parameters at the same time using your mouse. You can also record your movements and use the XY pad as a programmable two-dimensions LFO.
Both 12dB high-pass and low-pass filters are available to use for sculpting your sound, ideal for creating new and exciting sounds. Both filters have cutoff and Q (resonance controls). You also have access to a range of studio-grade effects including Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Delay (mono/stereo) and a premium-quality Reverb algorithm.

Created by leading sound designers and music artists, the presets span everything from classic vocoder styles to experimental patches.
