Added sweetener
Outgrowing what was possible on the hardware original, Arturia have augmented Flanger BL-20 to cope with the demands of modern producers and musicians. Equipped with a stunning range of tools, Arturia has implemented a high-pass filter, function generator, zero-crossing manual control and much more all with the ability to be loaded stereo or mono.
Absent from the original, the zero-crossing switch looks at the modulated signals which run back to the original starting point, causing 'blips' in the sound and deeper flange effects. When activated, the polarity of inversed and the delays in the dry signal to create an increasing flange depth. Traditionally, flanging is an additive effect where the delay signal sums to the dry signal creating comb filtering, therefore the zero-crossing inverts this creating a subtractive signal. Resulting in an increase in cancellations and comb filtering, with this one control it's much like turning the intensity up to 11 and then some!
Moving into the Advanced panel of the plug-in, Arturia have added a myriad of features to improve performance and functionality. Firstly, the Flanger BL-20 includes a 12dB/oct high-pass filter. A simple yet vital tool, filtering out the excessive low-end information will help to keep a clean signal by not modulating frequencies below the filter. Often when modulating low-frequencies, you will encounter instabilities, especially when working with bass-heavy instruments such as a kick drum or bass guitar.
Opening the Advanced panel, you'll be greeted by the large Function Generator. This has been ported from another Arturia plug-in to allow you to control your flanging much like a step or pattern sequencer. A highly-powerful method of manually controlling your effect in combination with the LFO and Envelope Follower parameters, the Function Generator can be hand-drawn to create rhythmic dynamics that follow the tempo and flow of your music. Coming with three 'quick draw' functions to get started. The Function Generator is capable of complex shapes and it can be very difficult to reproduce them, not to mention time-consuming. That's why the Function Generator has its own preset library, where you can save your own functions for later use, or load previously stored function shapes.
In combination with LFO modulation, Arturia have included a simple waveshape selection to alter the response of your effect from Sine, Square, Ramp and Descending Saw shapes.
Lastly, the Stereo Offset lets you alter the stereo field of the processed signal. Mimicking the independent delay circuits found on the original hardware, the Stereo Offset control lets you virtually alter the CV offset per channel. Acting as a mix button between the two circuits, you can unlock a variety of interesting spatial positioning depending on the input source.
The studio staple effect
Ubiqutous on the pedalboards of guitarists all over the world, flanging is undoubtedly one of the most recognisable effects available. Accurately recreating the bucket-brigade device (BBD) circuitry from the original hardware, Flanger BL-20 captures the vintage sparkle and warmth that make the hardware counterpart so revered. Indistinguishable from the original, Arturia's state-of-the-art TAE and Phi analog-modelling techniques make Flanger BL-20 a must-have for mixing engineers and musicians looking for dynamic movement across their tracks.
Unquestionably brought to the mainstream through electric guitar performances, BL-20 is perfectly apt at enhancing just about any part of your mix. Animate backing vocals with subtle 'wooshing', helping them sit behind a lead vocal or enrich a repetitive drum loop with exciting modulation. Undoubtedly, Flanger BL-20 can perform on electric instruments as well, be it electric guitar, synthesizers or electric piano, you can use it to great creative effect for solo sections or dashed throughout your track as a compositional tool. Whatever your vision, Arturia Flanger BL-20 is a mix sweetener, everything you run through it will simply sound better.
Another reason to choose it is its versatility and depth. In fact, despite its looks, this flanger is far from being "simplistic". You have 3 different modulation sources. Besides the usual and expected LFO, you can also use a manual source or an envelope follower.
Powered by technology
Using proprietary modelling algorithms, Flanger BL-20 can recreate the iconic instruments down to the component parts to create unrivalled realism and immersion. Unmatched in analog emulation, Flanger BL-20 is powered by TAE and Phi technologies. TAE offers component-level modelling to accurately present the characteristics and behaviour of the instrument, whilst Phi's state-of-the-art physical modelling brings the acoustic properties into the virtual world for hyper-realism. The result is truly a next-level sound that is indistinguishable from the original to add to your productions.
Reviews
"Despite Flanger BL-20 being an emulation of a near-mythical bit of old-school outboard gear, it has some versatile tricks up its sleeve." - Mark Bowen (IDLES)
"This is the first one I've heard that instantly gave me the feeling of a piece of hardware I've owned for years. I'm having so much fun using it and remembering just how creative and fun this unit can be." - Tim Bazell (Mix Engineer)
