Purchasing preamps can be a big commitment. Not only do they cost a lot. You'll find that most offer a very specific sound. The TB12 is a game-changer. Despite its modest price, the mic pre offers an incredible amount of versatility. At the start of the pre's chain is the choice of a Melcor 1731 or Jensen 918 op-amplifier. Choose the 1731 if you want extreme levels of colouration. The 918 is transparent and imparts very little character onto your signal. These can also be removed so you can include your own tried-and-tested favourites. From here, you'll be able to able to choose between a 100 percent steel or 50 percent nickel transformer. If you're wanting a bold sound then steel is the way to go. For even more choice you're able to completely bypass this stage. The seemingly infinite number of sounds means you'll be covered for any task thrown your way.
