Key Features
The Doepfer A-101-2v Vactrol Lowpass Gate Vintage Edition is a modular vactrol-based low-pass filter and VCA, designed to fit into your Eurorack synthesizer system. Inspired by vintage 292-style modules but keen to push the envelope, the A-101-2 offers attenuators for both CV and audio inputs in addition to a manual resonance control and dual-gate inputs, allowing you to switch the function of the module via the onboard toggle switch seamlessly.
The A-101-2 works by adding harmonic content to subharmonic frequencies whilst leaving softer higher register frequencies untouched. This provides you with a unique way to process the low-frequency content of your track without having to rely on subtractive synthesis. Ideal for adding thickness to weak pads or for taming harsh high-end harmonics in a sawtooth lead.
With both Audio in and CV in, the Doepfer A-101-2v Vactrol Lowpass Gate Vintage Edition offers a tremendous level of flexibility to integrate into virtually any system. DC-coupled inputs can be used to attenuate DC signals down to lowest frequency of 50Hz . Inspired by classic modules, this 'Vintage Edition' features a retro-style black faceplate.

In the design of the A-101-2v, vactrol controls are used to determine the frequency response in Low-pass mode and the amplitude in VCA mode simultaneously. This single control is what allows the A-101-2v to be used as a combination of either 12dB low-pass filter, VCA or both together. Vactrols create a smooth and linear sound and behaviour, meaning you can drive both the resonance of your low-pass and the amplitude of your VCA and you won't distort or add unwanted saturation into your signal.
A mainstay in West Coast synthesis, vactrol low-pass gates start with a simple oscillator waveform, modulating it to alter the shape of the harmonics. Following this modulation is the filter with a low-pass gate and in the case of the A-101-2v, an aggressive filter is applied with serious amounts of resonance to completely reshape the sound of your signal.
