A 45-degree bearing edge is a common cut for snare drums, featuring a 1-ply edge, close to the outside of the drum shell. With a 45-degree bearing edge, the drum head film has much less contact with the drum shell itself. This results in a much livelier sound, packed full of sustain and attack. These bearing edges also produce considerably more harmonic overtones, creating a brighter-sounding snare drum. These added overtones make fine-tuning even easier, due to the increased sensitivity to tension changes.
