A tam tam is not the same as a regular gong. It produces no definite pitch, which gives it a noise-like character. Because of the tam tam's ability to produce a large number of inharmonic partials, it has plenty of presence in orchestra, with no difficulty rising above the entire sound. Of course, this all depends on the size of the tam tam.
The tam tam was introduced to Western orchestra centuries ago and has since become a standard in orchestral and concert band works. Due to their nature they are perfect for slowly building sound intensity to a powerful climax.
