Colossal tones from a small amp head. The Marshall DSL20HR has two channels: ultra-gain and classic gain, each with independent level and gain controls. This means you can tinker with each channel to your preference and seamlessly switch between them with a footswitch. The EQ, reverb and twin gain settings give you a plethora of tonality to explore. Crystal-clear shimmering cleans, vintage crackly fuzz right through to full-on saturated crunch. It’s built for rock’n’roll and boasts enough gain to make your legs shake but its tonal versatility makes it more than capable in a variety of musical styles.
Both channels share a 3-band EQ and independent presence and resonance control to offer you excellent tone sculpting control. Adjust these to exploit your guitars tonality and match the room ambience for an output that’s just right. Finally, there’s nothing quite like reverb for adding that little bit of sustain and character to your notes, and the DSL20HR comes with a built-in circuit saving you the trouble of manually adding the effect with a pedal.
Need to practise at home or in a small rehearsal space? No problem! The DSL20HR has a variable power output of 20W and 10W meaning you can cut down the noise levels and still retain the vigorous valve sound that’s found at higher volumes. As tubes need a lot of current running through them to elicit their saturation and compression, simply turning down the volume on valve amps sacrifices some of this tonality. Marshall have optimised their low output mode to reshape the power at 10W, rather than following the traditional method of removing a valve from the signal. The result is you’ll always have access to the full, sweet sound this amp is capable of, whether you’re at a small jam session or intimate gig.
Marshall's partnership with software developers Softube has led to the DSL range being equipped with Softube emulation technology. This gives you a direct connection to the amplifier, which sends out the sound reminiscent of a professionally mic'd Marshall 1960 cabinet. This signal can send your tone directly to a mixing desk for a no-fuss and no compromise setup at gigs. The Softube output also makes recording a simple task, as you can be guaranteed of a fantastic cabinet sound without having to worry about microphone placement and room acoustics.
The DSL20HR's vast capabilities and compact size make it an amplifier that shines both at home and out on the road. Easy to transport, able to cut down its volume without sacrificing tone and containing a dizzying array of EQ options for some sizzling sonics, it’s an amp for all applications. Get inspired, get crazy and have some fun with this monster Marshall.
