1963 was the last year the Precision bass was tweaked into the legendary bass of today. The bass’ fingerboard was replaced for the incredible smooth round-laminated rosewood and the slightly wider ‘’C’’ neck and comfortable contours of the years before have been adjusted for extra comfort. In ’63, the precision bass was providing the irresistible heartbeat of Motown, adding the rumble beneath surf music, and providing the foundation of most music onstage and in the studio.
The Precision bass features a solid alder body, a tonewood that Fender prominently used in the 50’s and 60’s, delivering a strong, full bodied tone with plenty of clarity to let notes sing. The tonewood provides a decent amount of sustain, creating bright, sizzling highs, excellently rounded lows, and beefy mids. The American Vintage ’63 Bass is also fitted with an American Vintage bass bridge, enhancing string sustain and resonance while its classic bridge guard adds to the vintage aesthetic.
The solid maple neck provides the Precision bass with bright characteristics, tightening up its sound and delivering plenty of cut. The maple delivers a powerfully sharp punch when the strings are hit hard whilst still retaining its clarity, allowing each note to sing. The addition of a round-laminated rosewood fingerboard provides an incredibly smooth surface, providing quick and easy position changes. The rosewood provides the bass with warm, soft tones whilst helping to ‘fur up’ the maples natural sound. The maple and rosewood work together to give the guitar sparkling highs that sizzle, a thick, firm low end, and an open midrange with a snappy attack.
The American Vintage bass features a period-correct split single coil pickup, designed to the original spec of the ’63 pickup to produce massive tonal power with a snappy high end and round, sweet low end. The pickup is designed with Alnico V magnets to add extra focus and enhance the overall dynamics. Enamel-coated magnetic wire gives the pickup its warm, vintage-style tone, making it perfect for a wide range of playing styles.
